Intimate Partner Violence and Domestic Violence Counselling

As an IPV/DV therapist, I provide counselling services provided to individuals who are experiencing or have experienced Intimate Partner Violence (IPV). IPV is one of the most destructive and widespread forms of violence, impacting people of all ages, genders, cultures, religions, and socio-economic backgrounds. IPV/DV counselling can provide a space for individuals to share their experiences, receive support, and work through the trauma and effects of abuse. 

 

Here are some ways IPV counselling can help:

Safety Planning:

The first priority in a situation of IPV is to protect oneself and secure a safe environment. An IPV counsellor can help individuals develop safety plans to keep themselves and their children safe from harm.

Healing from Trauma:

IPV can leave individuals traumatized and dealing with emotional, physical scars. IPV counselling can help coach individuals through the process of healing by providing emotional support, coping mechanisms and strategies for managing the symptoms of trauma.

Emotional Support:

IPV counselling provides a safe, confidential, and non-judgmental space for individuals to explore their feelings without fear of reprisal or stigmatization.

Anger Management:

Some survivors of IPV may struggle with managing their anger. Counselling provides tools and techniques for managing anger, and supports clients work through their triggers.

Feelings of Isolation:

After experiencing IPV, individuals may feel isolated and alone. Counselling aids individuals in gaining a support system and building healthy relationships.

Identifying Triggers and Red Flags:

In counselling, clients can learn to recognize the warning signs and patterns that lead to IPV, enabling them to proactively manage and resolve conflicts without turning to dysfunction.

There are different therapeutic approaches in IPV counselling, including individual or group counselling and couples counselling. The goal of IPV counselling is to empower individuals and provide them with the necessary tools to move towards a healthier, more stable and secure life.
